History: This lot, which is adjacent to Wheeling Creek and the Ohio River, was once used as a railroad right-of-way.
Brownfield Issue: PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are a class of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil and gasoline) have been found both in the ground and ground water. PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) have been found in the ground water.
How did the EPA Assessment Grant help this site? Since a Phase II had already been completed for this site a few years back, funds were used for reuse planning of this site.
Next Steps: The owners of this site, the City of Wheeling plan to turn this brownfield into a plaza, a trailhead for the Wheeling Heritage Trail and a parking lot.
