Location: 58 19th Street Wheeling, WV

History: This site has had a long industrial past, with the first documented industrial use of the property dating back to 1880. Some of the industrial companies that have located here over the years include: the Wheeling Hinge Company, Warren’s Chemical Works, a tannery, Atlas Glass and Metal Company, City Gas Works and Electric Light Plant and the Continental Can Company.

How did the EPA Assessment Grant help this site? Funds were used to complete a Phase II Assessment. Additional funds were also used to further investigate the DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquid) that was found during the Phase II assessment.

Next Steps: The City of Wheeling is currently in negotiations to purchase the property from the owner. The City then plans to use Revolving Loan Fund money from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection  to help with the cost of remediation.
