Property/Site Name: Columbia Gas Building

Location: 44 16th Street Wheeling, WV

History: The Columbia Gas building (also known as the Manufacturer’s Light & Heat Building) was constructed in the 1962 and served as the headquarters for Columbia gas of West Virginia from the early 1960s to the mid 1980’s. The building then was used for attorney offices up until 2015 when the entire building was vacated.

Brownfield Issue: Asbestos. Like many buildings, built during 1960s, the Columbia Gas building contains asbestos.

How did the EPA Assessment Grant help this site? Funds were used for an asbestos assessment.

Next Steps: In order to get this building back into productive use, the private owner will need to remediate the asbestos.
