The Northwestern Area Agency on Aging (NWAAA) was designated by the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services, under the Older Americans Act, to administer funds to the service providers in the northwestern region of West Virginia. The NWAAA is one of 670 agencies in the national agency network of Area Agencies on Aging. The counties served by Region 1 are Brooke, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Hancock, Harrison, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio, Pleasants, Ritchie, Tyler, Wetzel, Wirt and Wood counties in West Virginia.

The Area Agency on Aging also advocates on behalf of older persons, identifies the needs of the elderly and creates plans for meeting those needs to enable the elderly to maintain their independence and dignity.

Our priorities as an Area Agency are as follows:

  • Liaison – between state and local provider agencies; provide timely and accurate information; support and assist service providers; provide public information.
  • Monitor – of Older American Act programs and related state programs.
  • Grants Manager – negotiate grants and contracts; interpret relevant federal and state operating procedures; maintain and support fiscal and program management systems.
  • Trainer – determine training needs; sponsor or co-sponsor training activities for local providers; make available materials and resources to provide a better understanding of the senior population.
  • Advocate – develop data in support of local, state and federal advocacy positions; solicit, identify, discuss, describe and articulate the needs of older persons; develop public support for and involvement in advocacy efforts.

In West Virginia the Area Agency’s purpose is to assist county senior centers in their delivery of services to older persons the best possible way.
